WOW-- this was one fabulous venue inauguration, I was a Bethel Woods virgin.
Anywhere else Steve Winwood could have headlined and made the crowd wild playing his greatest hits from Spencer Davis Group, Traffic and Blind Faith. Can we consider him an opening act? At least 3 numbers -- Can't Find My Way Home, Gimme Some Lovin', and Low Spark of High-heeled Boys would make my all-time rock greats list. He sounded amazing vocally and on piano and guitar. Fab bass player. Gorgeous sax. I loved it!
The extraordinary opening of Frank Maza live accompanying the video of his gig at Woodstock set the tone. Then when he announced that we were standing at Ground Zero for peace, he had me hooked and truly moved. My earlier fantasy was hearing him play at Red Rocks in Colorado, but this was so much more because of HIS history, THE history, OUR collective history with what he described as "hallowed ground." The set choices, the consummate musicianship, the accompanying videos (the African scenes behind Jingo-ba!), the energy, and even the "sermon" met all my concert-going and soul needs.
